Looking to make meals at home more interesting? We've got just the job...

Cheap and easy pancakes for Shrove Tuesday:

When is Shrove Tuesday in 2025? Pancake Day, as it's also known, takes place on 4 March 2025. So it's a great opportunity to whip up a batch yourself. The easiest pancake recipe only calls for four ingredients, which you'll probably already have in your fridge and kitchen cupboards — flour, milk, butter and eggs.

Crepe recipe:

Delia Smith's basic pancake recipe makes the thin crepe-style pancakes that are perfect for flipping. All you need is 110g plain flour, 2 large eggs, 200ml semi-skimmed milk mixed with 75ml water, and 50g butter.

Method:

1. Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre.
2. Break the eggs into the well and whisk them to bring in the flour around the outside so it all combines.
3. Whisk in a small amount of the milk and water mixture bit by bit, then bring in any lumps on the sides of the bowl and keeping whisking until smooth (you're looking for the consistency of thin cream).
4. Melt the butter in a pan and whisk in two tablespoons of melted butter to the batter (pour the rest of the melted butter into a bowl, so you can dip a bit of kitchen paper in it to wipe over the pan when you cook them).

Top tip: When you cook the pancakes, get your pan hot and hold the ladle close to the pan when you pour, and tip the pan from side to side to evenly coat the base with batter. Flip after around 30 seconds.

Buttermilk pancakes recipe:

John Torode's buttermilk pancake recipe is more involved, but creates those thick, fluffy, American-style pancakes. You'll need 350g self-raising flour, 1tsp bicarbonate of soda, 2tbsp caster sugar, 200ml buttermilk (this costs a pound or less from supermarkets), 400ml semi-skimmed milk, 2 free-range eggs, and 85g butter.

Method:

1. Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda and sugar into a bowl.
2. Melt the butter in a pan.
3. Mix the buttermilk, milk, eggs and melted butter In a separate jug.
4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and combine (but don't over-mix).

Top tip: Cook them for about 1 minute on each side — you'll know it's ready to turn over because bubbles will appear on the top. These small, thick pancakes aren't easy to flip like the wide, thin crepes, so you might want to use a spatula or palette knife to turn them.

What are the cheapest supermarket pancakes in 2025?

If you don't fancy the faff of making your own, you can buy buttermilk pancakes ready-made from the supermarket. But how do the costs compare?

It's worth bearing in mind that many supermarkets only offer buttermilk pancakes from their premium own-brand ranges, which means they're going to cost more than you might expect.

It's also worth noting that the prices below show the cost per pancake — and the pancakes aren't necessarily the same size — the Co-op, for example, comes out at the more expensive end per pancake, but they are giant ones!

Pancake funny faces

Get creative with some fruit and a bit of imagination

Strawberries, bananas and blueberries make for the most ideal decorations for kids' pancakes.

Face: Banana slices for eyes (with blueberry pupils), blueberries to make the smiley mouth, and strawberries for the tongue and outer edge. This works well on thin crepes.

Teddy bear: Banana semi-circles make cute ears, and a circular slice is the muzzle to balance a blueberry nose on top of. Blueberries for eyes and jobs a good'un.

Owls: Strawberries for wings and beaks, and flaked almonds for feathers join the classic blueberries on bananas slice eyes. These are ideal on mini pancakes.

Rocket: This involves some cutting of the pancake into shape, but then it's super-simple with strawberry flames at the base and blueberry windows up the middle. 3, 2, 1... lift off!
